Rise Up Retreat Reflection

I was lucky enough to go on a retreat/conference with Rise Up! a program through PHABC (Public Health Association of British Columbia). Through this experience, online education, and place-based service with Naramata Slow Community Group I have been fortunate enough to learn so much about food systems and creating more sustainable food systems. The Rise Up retreat was an amazing experience that I thoroughly enjoyed, I especially appreciated hearing how so many people had such winding careers like myself. And how food systems are everywhere and impacted by everyday decisions. Through workshops at the retreat I learnt what type of leader I am, really the three types of leader I can be, and which one comes out depending on the situation. The discussion about what type of leader is best for the group and the type of decisions needed was especially illuminating, causing me to reflect on my jobs and what would have been a better leadership style for me to take.

I got to see all the different types of careers and social justice warriors there are. And through the workshops and discussions I saw how important it is to work towards our strengths together instead of trying to do everything on our own.

On the second day, by doing the art of noticing and being workshop and walking along the beach I felt really present. It was a very grounding practice that was needed in the middle of learning so much. It helped me pay attention to the things that I love and why I fight for them so passionately. And was a good reminder to take time in nature and be present, connecting not just on special occasions but always.

It was amazing to be surrounded by like-minded people who love the environment just as much as me, and to see how many people who are excited by gardening too. In the process of playing bingo, but with people’s experiences, I realized how fortunate and privileged I have been since I learnt how to garden as a small child. Growing up with my hands in the dirt and how grounded that has made me in this world.

There’s so much more that I will continue to unpack and being able to listen to all of the different speakers was truly an honour. This was only in March and it feels like it’s been a blink of the eye and forever already. Thanks to all who made this happen and came with their full selves, so appreciated. ♥️
